Hands up if you’ve ever been told ‘nothing’ when you've asked your child 'What did you do today, darling?' 🙋🏼♀️
As a teacher I can promise you that they did not do 'nothing' all day. But you definitely won't be the only parent getting that response. Keep in mind that they're tired and probably absolutely ravenous after a busy day. I’d imagine you don’t share every single part of your day, right? So don’t expect to know everything. I know it's really hard to accept but it’s just not very realistic.
Instead try this:
🖤Tell them about your day.
Model to them how to talk about the ups and downs of your day. This gives them chance to absorb the information without having to use more energy relaying their day.
Ask these:
🖤What was your favourite thing that happened today?
🖤What was the hardest part?
🖤How did you feel today?
🖤Did you need anything today?
Make your questions opened ended. If they can respond with just ‘yes’ or ‘no’ then they probably will.
