5 Essential Tips for Nurturing Your Child's Mental Health and Wellbeing

As parents of Generation Alpha, we are raising children in an increasingly stressful world. We are nurturing children who have no memory of a world without social media and who are facing more stress, anxiety and depression than has ever been documented before. It is our responsibility, as parents, to equip our children with the tools they’ll need to support their mental health…but that’s easier said than done for us millennials who probably didn’t hear the term ‘mental health’ until we were adults.

In today’s fast-paced world, children are often overwhelmed by school pressures, social dynamics and even screen time, which can lead to difficulty winding down, concentrating or managing their emotions. This, mixed with our own pressures as adults and busy schedules is a recipe for stress within our homes and families. Our children need to be equipped with tools that promote emotional well-being, reduce stress and create a calming atmosphere. So where do we start?

Get Outside More

Spending time outdoors allows children to connect with nature, reducing stress and anxiety while enhancing their mood and overall sense of well-being. Exposure to natural environments also boosts cognitive function and creativity, promoting mental clarity and focus. This can be as simple as a daily walk or playing in the garden – we don’t need to over complicate it, we just need to do it.

Play More

Play is essential for children's emotional and social development, helping them build resilience and cope with challenges. It also fosters imagination and problem-solving skills, which contribute to improved mental health and a stronger sense of self-esteem. Children are born playful but busy lives and full-on curriculums means that our generation of children are getting less time to play when they need more playtime than ever.

Physically Move More

Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins, which improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in children. Regular movement also helps improve sleep, boosts energy levels, and promotes brain health, leading to better mental clarity and focus. Physical movement doesn’t mean we need to sign them up for football clubs or swimming. It can look like 15 jumping jacks in the hallway or dancing in the kitchen.

Use Screens Less

Reducing screen time allows children to engage in more meaningful, face-to-face interactions, which improves social skills and emotional connections. Less exposure to screens also prevents overstimulation, reducing stress and improving the ability to focus and regulate emotions. This topic sometimes stings a little as many parents feel they need screen-time in order to get things done. I am not suggesting you eliminate it all together but we must ensure our children develop healthy screen habits during their childhood years.
